Industrial machinery under CPV division 42 covers EU procurement of process equipment, pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, industrial furnaces, mixing and filtering equipment, and general-purpose machinery for industrial applications. Major contracting authorities include public utilities (water treatment, waste management, energy production), defence manufacturing establishments, public industrial enterprises, universities and research institutions with applied laboratory facilities, and hospital sterilisation and laundry operations. This division spans a vast range of equipment types — from small laboratory pumps to large-scale water treatment trains.
Industrial machinery procurement in the EU public sector is governed by the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC), soon to be replaced by the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, which introduces mandatory cybersecurity requirements for machinery with digital components. CE marking under the Machinery Directive is required for virtually all equipment in this category. ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU) certification is required for equipment operating in potentially explosive atmospheres — relevant for oil and gas, chemical, and wastewater treatment procurement. Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU) applies to boilers, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and piping assemblies above specified pressure ratings.
